What Tax Reliefs Do UK Businesses Miss?

The reliefs that get overlooked most often, and the reason it keeps happening.

It is a scope problem, not a competence problem

Most accountants do compliance well. Specialist reliefs are a different discipline, and many practices refer them out rather than handle them.

If nobody owns the question, it never gets asked.

The usual suspects

These four come up repeatedly in UK businesses.

  • R&D tax relief on qualifying development work
  • Capital allowances on fixtures in commercial property
  • Land remediation relief on contaminated or derelict sites
  • Patent Box on profits from patented technology

What to do about it

Ask your accountant directly which specialist reliefs they review and which they do not. Then get the gap checked once a year.

Reclaim Tax UK, a company I am involved in, handles that review. Nothing is guaranteed, and a good specialist will tell you when there is no claim.
