Customer retention and reactivation
Start with customers who already know the business.
Customer retention improves when the promised result, next step and ownership stay clear after the sale. Reactivation is different: return to a dormant customer with a relevant reason based on the previous relationship. Avoid fake urgency and indiscriminate offers; usefulness and timing matter more than campaign volume.
Retention is usually an operating issue first
Customers rarely experience a business as separate departments. A missed hand-off, unclear update or unresolved issue can outweigh a strong sales conversation. Map the points where the customer waits, repeats information or has to chase, then assign ownership for each next action.
Reactivation needs a real reason
Use what you already know about the previous work to identify a sensible follow-up: a renewal window, a changed requirement, a complementary service or a useful review. A generic 'we miss you' message gives the customer little reason to reply.
- Segment customers by what they bought and when.
- Check whether the previous outcome and any open issue are recorded.
- Offer one relevant next step and make declining easy.
- Record the response so the same customer is not repeatedly contacted without context.
